Description of ASTM-E3472/E3472M 2026ASTM E3472/E3472M-26Active Standard: Standard Practice for Atmospheric Leaks Using a Solid-State Sensor as a Detector ProbeASTM E3472/E3472MScope 1.1 This practice covers procedures for detecting the sources of gas leaking at the rate of 1 × 10–6 Pa m3/s [1 × 10–5 standard cm3/s] or greater. This may be used to locate a leak on any object that can be pressurized with a gas that is detectable by a solid-state detector. The test sensitivity will vary widely depending on the gas being sensed and its concentration. 1.2 Solid-state refers to metal oxide and semiconductor sensors; it does not include optical or thermal conductivity solid-state sensors. A solid-state sensor is designed in such a way that the measurand, the physical property to be sensed, exploits a physical phenomenon within the sensor structure. This physical phenomenon leads to an electrical response that can be detected and magnified with electronics. 1.3 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
